Faq on Mobile Phones
Why is my mobile phone not working?
Here is a quick checklist that you can do before contacting your service provider:
What if my handset has failed and does not work?
If your handset is still within the warranty period you need to contact Mobitel who will be able to advise you on the next steps to take. If your your warranty has expired, then you need to consider the cost of repair vs. purchase of a new handset. Most handsets last approx. 3 years however in some cases of extreme use this maybe shorter. Most suppliers will charge you a fee to look at your phone and provide a quote; this is then deducted off the cost of repairing your phone if you choose to have the work done.
How long should I charge my battery for?
For the initial charge, at least 14 to 16 hours continuous charge is essential. After that, preferably overnight every time. See the page on the Battery in your phone user manual for more details.
How often should I discharge my battery?
It depends on the type of battery, and your requirements. For NiCad and NiMH, discharging maintains charge capacity at the expense of shortening the overall life of the battery. A rough rule of thumb is to discharge a NiCad battery every other charge, and discharge a NiMH every tenth charge. You should never discharge a Li-Ion or Li-Polymer battery.
How long should my battery last?
This depends. Expect a NiCad battery to last up to 500 to 600 charge cycles. A NiMH battery slightly less. Li-Ion batteries fade away gradually. After 500 cycles, they have about half their initial capacity. You have to decide when the battery is "too small". Expect to buy a new battery every 18 months.
I get a bad echo on calls. What causes it?
This can be a network problem, or caused by poor signal, but it is generally sound from the handset's earpiece reaching its microphone. This is sometimes a result of having the volume set too high, but it is generally caused by the sound travelling down inside a leather phone case. Try removing the case and/or turning the volume down.
Why do people shout into their mobile phones?
There are three explanations: The technical one is that mobile handsets don't have the "sidetone" (a little of the microphone sound fed straight back to the earpiece) that is present in fixed phones. People can't hear their own voice, so they assume the other end can't either. The less technical one is that they think the person at the other end will hear well if they shout (the opposite of the truth, in fact). The third and usual reason is that people simply aren't aware that they're doing it.
What is the use of PIN?
The PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a security feature of your SIM card. It is given when you connect to a network. Activating your PIN can prevent your mobile phone number from being used if it is lost or stolen. If you wish to activate your PIN or change it you can do so by using the security feature on your phone.
What is PUK?
PUK is Personal Unblocking Code. It is required when a security PIN has been entered incorrectly three times. Entering an incorrect PUK three times can permanently block the SIM Card in your phone.
Who do I contact to get my phone unblocked?
You must contact Mobitel to get the unblocking code.
