Colombo - 09th June, 2010
Celebrated every year on the 5th of June, 'World Environment Day' is one of the principal channels through which worldwide awareness and public action for conserving the environment is stimulated. 'World Environment Day 2010' is celebrated under the tri pronged theme "Many Species. One Planet. One Future" in order to highlight the importance of promoting sustainable and equitable development, whilst protecting planet earth. As its pledge towards preserving mother earth, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel has forged ahead to reflect its care for the environment with the introduction of many initiatives.
This World Environment Day, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel seeks to propel and empower Sri Lankans to become active agents in saving the environment. Sri Lanka's National Mobile Service provider has worked along multiple spheres to advocate the 'Go Green Concept' amongst its employees and customer base. Among the latest of such initiatives is the introduction of E-statements on this year's 'World Environment Day'. This facility enables Mobitel subscribers to receive electronic versions of their bills and thereby reduce the unnecessary usage of paper. As a further encouragement for customers to join Mobitel's green initiative, the company is also introducing special monthly and annual draws whereby customers who opt-in for Mobile e-statements shall stand a chance to win Laptop Computers, M3 High Speed Internet Dongles and Official Sri Lanka Cricket T-Shirts.
The paradigm shift towards utilising virtual faxes is another initiative Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel has embarked on. Mobitel's mFax service eliminated the need for individuals to posses a fax machine, enabling the user to forward the fax to a convenient internal location or even an email address. This initiative has enabled the organization to substantially reduce paper usage and the use of unnecessary electronic devices. Environment pollutants such as ink and also wastage of electricity can be minimized immensely.
Mobitel's ambition to spearhead innovation and creativity in the mobile ambience was demonstrated through the mLearning initiative, a collaboration with the University of Colombo. The breakthrough "M-learning" project played a pivotal role as transition from old to modern conduct of education was a truly innovative concept to be introduced to an educational institute. "M-learning" an interactive educative mobile platform, has delivered immense value to the system of education and continues eliminate the usage of paper and reduce carbon emissions caused by the travelling student.
Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel's corporate vision "To lead Sri Lanka towards an Info-com and Knowledge rich society through our service offerings" reiterates the company's commitment to enhance and create environmental awareness. In line with this the company embarked upon a program to provide staff members with laptop computers and thus progressively phase out desktop computers, facilitating convenience and contributing towards enhancing productivity within the organization while reducing the need for travel.
The journey to evolve Sri Lanka, into a society of environmentally conscious people is what Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel aspires to achieve in the near future.
